Since the official implementation of the Regulations on the Promotion of National Reading on February 1, 2026, Jiuhuashan Global Geopark has deepened the creation of the "Scholarly Jiuhua" (Shuxiang Jiuhua) brand. By implementing multiple measures to carry out national reading series activities and constructing a promotion system covering different age groups and industries, the park guides the public to participate in reading. This initiative aims to enhance the core competitiveness of tourism through cultural soft power, making the fragrance of books the most moving backdrop of the park.
Cultivating Campus Soil: From "One-Square-Meter Study" to the Transformation of "Scholarly Youth"
"To establish oneself, learning comes first; to learn, reading is fundamental." In the promotion of national reading at Jiuhuashan Global Geopark, the youth has always been the primary focus. Leveraging the educational opportunity of "April 23 World Book Day," Jiuhua Township Central Primary School planned and launched a series of well-structured and innovatively formatted reading promotion activities starting in late March, striving to plant the habit of reading deep within the hearts of young people.
The family is the first school in life. The school innovatively launched the "Build a One-Square-Meter Family Study" initiative. This move is not merely a simple use of space, but a reconstruction of family culture. The activity encourages parents to use idle spaces such as balconies or living room corners to create a dedicated reading area for their children, equipped with at least 30 high-quality books covering picture books, children's literature, popular science, and classic masterpieces, accompanied by warm reading signage. This "micro-renovation" not only optimizes the physical environment but also creates a warm psychological atmosphere, making the home the first fertile ground for nurturing reading habits.
Applying precise strategies for different grade levels is another highlight of the school's activities. Based on the cognitive characteristics of students at different ages, the school designed differentiated growth paths: the lower grades carry out a "21-Day Reading Check-in" to encourage students to become "Reading Stars" through habit formation, tempering their willpower through daily persistence; the middle grades host a "Good Book Recommendation Video" contest, encouraging children to become "Excellent Book Ambassadors" to practice expression and logical thinking in front of the camera; the higher grades focus on the "My Reading Story" essay competition, guiding students to reflect and settle their thoughts through writing as they compete for the title of "Scholarly Youth."
"Before, my child would watch TV as soon as they got home. Now, with this 'One-Square-Meter Study,' they actively pull me in to sit for a while every day," said one student's parent. "The 21 days of persistence transformed reading from a task into a conscious behavior. This change has shown us the power of reading." This series of measures has not only solved the questions of "what to read" and "how to read" but has also subtly cultivated the sound personalities of the youth.
Focusing on Diverse Groups: Building a Spiritual Community Through Reading
The breadth of national reading determines the height of urban civilization. Jiuhuashan Global Geopark has not confined reading within campus walls but has extended its reach to rural communities, conducting various demand-driven reading promotion activities targeted at diverse social cells such as women, young entrepreneurs, college students, and merchants.
Within public cultural spaces, reading exchange sessions are held in an orderly manner. For returning college students and young entrepreneurs, the Jiuhua Town New Era Civilization Practice Station, in collaboration with the Town Youth League Committee, organized a reading session themed "Scholarly Youth · Continuing the Glory." During the event, young people sat around tables to read classics such as The Ordinary World and From the Soil. Xing Mengyu, a college student from Jiuhua Town, shared while discussing The Ordinary World: "Sun Shaoping's spirit of persisting in reading despite hardships deeply moved me. As the younger generation of Jiuhuashan, we should draw strength through reading. No matter what industry we enter in the future, we must maintain this upward posture."
This deep clash of ideas has not only enhanced the theoretical literacy of the youth but also injected a "scholarly air" into local cultural tourism entrepreneurship. For women, the township organized female reading salons, emphasizing the core leadership role of women in family reading; for scenic area merchants, the focus was on promoting books related to honest business operations and tourism culture, linking reading with the improvement of tourism service quality.
These activities embody the significance of national reading—it is not only a ladder for personal growth but also a lubricant for social harmony and stability. Through reading, different groups have found a common spiritual language on this land of Jiuhuashan Global Geopark, building a tight-knit cultural community.
Enlightening the Hearts of Toddlers: Sowing Seeds of Reading via Picture Books and Bookmarks
"Habits formed in youth become second nature." For preschool children, the cultivation of reading habits is like a silent spring rain. The Early Childhood Education Center, combining the characteristics of young children, carried out a series of creative reading activities filled with childlike wonder, allowing even the youngest group to feel the charm of books.
In the classrooms of the Early Childhood Education Center, "reading check-ins" are no longer dull tasks but have become something to look forward to. Teachers use beautifully crafted "Reading Passbooks" to record every close encounter children have with books. The parent-child reading segment has become a bridge for emotional communication; parents and children snuggle together, and through reading picture books like Guess How Much I Love You, they not only develop the child's language perception but also enhance the parent-child attachment.
Furthermore, the center carefully planned "Story Sharing Sessions" and "Creative Bookmark Making" activities. During the story sharing sessions, children use their innocent voices to tell stories of the fairy tale worlds they see, exercising their courage and expression; in handicraft classes, children use their imagination to create unique bookmarks using leaves and colored strings. These activities organically combine "reading" with "doing," effectively stimulating children's interest in reading. Zhou Qin, head of the Early Childhood Education Center, said: "We don't expect children to recognize many words; we only hope that through the colors and stories in picture books, we can plant a seed of love for reading in their hearts and wait for it to bloom."
The fragrance of books carries one far, and a mind filled with knowledge radiates naturally. From the sound of reading on campus to the exchange of ideas in the community, and the warm shared reading within families, Jiuhuashan Global Geopark is reshaping the cultural temperament of this sacred mountain through a feast of national reading.
Looking ahead, Jiuhuashan Global Geopark will focus on the deep cultivation of the "Scholarly Jiuhua" national reading brand. It will not be satisfied with periodic activities but will embed reading spaces into scenic spots, guesthouses, and visitor centers, planning more regular, immersive, and high-quality reading events. By promoting national reading in a deep and detailed manner, every visitor and resident will be able to encounter a better version of themselves amidst the aroma of books, truly making Jiuhuashan a world-class tourist destination and cultural landmark where one can "see the mountains, see the water, and understand the culture."
