From September 4 to 11, 2023, a delegation from Jiuhuashan UNESCO Global Geopark participated in the 10th UNESCO Global Geoparks Conference in Marrakesh, Morocco, at the invitation of M’Goun UNESCO Global Geopark.
The conference featured the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council Meeting, Executive Board sessions, Advisory Committee meetings, Asia-Pacific Geoparks Network Forum, and thematic academic forums across nine domains: geoheritage conservation, geodiversity-biodiversity management, science popularization, sustainable tourism, SDG implementation, cultural heritage preservation, climate change response, inter-park collaboration, and aspiring geopark development.
As an active member, Jiuhuashan’s delegation engaged in the Asia-Pacific forum and plenary sessions, presenting a keynote report titled "Jiuhuashan Geopark’s Role in Regional Tourism Economy Transformation."The presentation highlighted environmental enhancements, geotourism innovations, and socioeconomic impacts since UNESCO designation, amplifying Chizhou City and Jiuhuashan’s global visibility.
During the conference, the delegation strengthened ties with sister park Rinjani-Lombok UNESCO Global Geopark (Indonesia) and held strategic dialogues with Guy Martini (Chair of the Global Geoparks Network), Jin Xiaochi (Vice-Chair and Asia-Pacific Network Chair), along with evaluators and global park representatives. Discussions covered geopark governance, geoheritage protection, and science communication systems, incorporating guidance from China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
At the exhibition booth, over 350 geological, cultural, and ecological brochures and guidebooks showcased Jiuhuashan’s unique resources. Representatives from Sweden, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and South Korea left handwritten messages of goodwill, enhancing the park’s international standing.
Held biennially as the premier global geopark event, this conference gathered 1,500+ experts from 50+ countries to advance sustainable geopark development.
