April 22, 2025 marked the 56thWorld Earth Day. To enhance public awareness of environmental protection and promote geoscience knowledge, jiuhuashan  Global Geopark, under the theme “Cherish the Earth: Harmonious Coexistence Between Humans and Nature,” organized a series of diverse science outreach activities in collaboration with the  Global Geoparks Network, schools, and research institutions, contributing to the protection of geological heritage and the advancement of ecological civilization.

On April 20, ahead of World Earth Day, jiuhuashan  Global Geopark was invited to participate in the “3rd Earth and Planetary Science Culture Week” hosted by the School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University. A special lecture titled“Enteringjiuhuashan” was delivered at the Yanyuan Forum. Through images, videos, and interactive discussions, the geopark’s unique geological landscapes, ecological resources, and cultural heritage were presented to university faculty, students, and the public, further enhancing its influence in geoscience outreach.

On April 22, led by staff from the jiuhuashan Geopark Administrative Center, nearly one hundred teachers and students from jiuhuashan Central School visited the Geopark Museum for a World Earth Day science practice activity. The students attended expert lectures on geological evolution, biodiversity, and cultural history, gaining insights into the formation of granite landforms and Quaternary glacial relics. They then toured the museum’s five themed exhibition halls, where interactive displays, geological specimens, and engaging explanations deepened their interest in geoscience. Many students noted that the activity helped them better understand the importance of protecting geological heritage and the ecological environment.

On the same day, jiuhuashan  Global Geopark, together with China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), the Hubei Provincial Forestry Bureau, and 39 other  Global Geoparks, co-organized a large-scale public outreach event. At the Shaw Museum of China University of Geosciences, thousands of visitors participated in interactive activities such as “The Secrets and Protection of Soil” and “A Journey into Minerals.” Student representatives delivered the“Cherish the Earth: Harmonious Coexistence Between Humans and Nature” Initiative, calling on the public to adopt low-carbon lifestyles and protect geological heritage. The event also featured a “Geoscience Lecture Hall,” where Professor Li Chang’an presented“Exploring China’s  Global Geoparks,” systematically introducing the geological characteristics and scientific value of jiuhuashan and strengthening public awareness of geopark conservation.

jiuhuashan was officially designated as a  Global Geopark in 2019. The World Earth Day series of activities not only popularized geoscience knowledge but also reinforced public responsibility for protecting natural heritage, contributing positively to the goal of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

Looking ahead, jiuhuashan  Global Geopark will continue to deepen science education efforts. In mid-to-late August 2025, it will host a symposium on the integrated development of geological landscapes and cultural tourism, alongside activities such as a science volunteer training camp and a geoscience summer camp, further promoting science-based study tourism and supporting the long-term development of science outreach in the geopark.
