What is the Global Geoparks Network?

The Global Geoparks Network (GGN), of which membership is obligatory for UNESCOGlobal Geoparks, is a legally constituted not-for-profit organisation with an annualmembership fee. The GGN was founded in 2004 and is a dynamic network where membersare committed to work together and exchange ideas of best practise and join in commonprojects to raise the quality standards of all products and practises of a UNESCO GlobalGeopark. While the GGN as a whole comes together every two years, it functions throughthe operation of regional networks, such as Asia Pacific Geoparks Network, the EuropeanGeoparks Network that meets twice a year to develop and promote joint activities.


The objectives of the Global Geoparks Network are:

to promote the equitablegeographical establishment,development and professionamanagement of Global Geoparks.


to advance knowiedge and understanding of thenature, function and role of Global Geoparks.


to assist local communities to value theirnatural and cultural heritage.


to preserve Earth heritage forpresent and future generations.


to educate and teach the broad public aboutissues in geo-sciences and their relation withenvironmental matters and natural hazards.


to ensure sustainable socio-economic and culturadevelopment based on the natural (or geological) system.


to foster multi-cultural links between heritage andconservation and the maintenance of geological andcultural diversity, using participatory schemes ofpartnership and management.


to stimulate researchwhen appropriate.


to promote joint initiatives between GlobalGeoparks (e.g.communication, publications,exchange of information, twinning)
