The UNESCO Global Geoparks Council successfully completed its 8th session through hybrid meetings held on September 4–5 and December 7–8, 2023. The Council reviewed 23 new UNESCO Global Geopark applications submitted between 2019–2022 (including 11 new 2023 applications, 6 deferred from 2020–2022 due to the pandemic, and 6 rectification applications postponed since 2021), alongside 56 revalidation assessments and 7 boundary adjustment requests for existing geoparks.
Following deliberations, the Council nominated 18 new geoparks for final approval by the UNESCO Executive Board during its Spring 2024 session. If endorsed, the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network will expand to 213 sites across 48 countries.
Regarding revalidations:
48 geoparks received green cards (successful revalidation)
8 received yellow cards (requiring improvements)
All 7 boundary adjustments were approved, with 4 exceeding 10% scale changes subject to final Executive Board ratification.
