The Wudalianchi UNESCO Global Geopark Museum has been named one of China’s 2023 "National Natural Resource Science Popularization Bases" by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Science and Technology. This prestigious designation recognizes sites that showcase advancements in natural sciences, promote earth science literacy, advance ecological conservation principles, and foster public awareness of resource sustainability and human-nature coexistence.

As a strategic project prioritized by China’s provincial Party committee and government, the museum originated from a directive by then member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee Li Changchun during his inspection of Heilongjiang. He emphasized that Wudalianchi—endowed with globally significant geoheritage—required "a world-class volcanic geology museum."

Located at the core of Wudalianchi Geopark’s new town, the museum spans 26,400 m² of land with 15,000 m² of built area and 8,500 m² of exhibition space. It employs immersive technologies to showcase global volcanism, Wudalianchi’s unique volcanic landscapes, and their衍生的矿泉 ecosystems, ethnic cultures, and mineral water resources. Beyond five thematic galleries, facilities include specimen labs, research centers, and a 3D theater—fulfilling roles in conservation, research, education, and public outreach.

As China’s authoritative hub for volcanic studies, it integrates geoscience, mineral spring medicine, and social sciences, serving as a national-level institution for research, wellness tourism, and academic field studies.

Looking ahead, the museum will expand science outreach initiatives, inviting youth to explore natural wonders and academic programs at the base. These efforts will cultivate a new ecology for science outreach rooted in respect for nature, resource conservation, and scientific curiosity.
